February is “Show the Love month” for a lot of WIs and Lincoln WI is no exception. Often we did this in January, but after some programme moving we were able to do this in the “correct” month. Show the Love is an initiative by the Climate Coalition of which the WI is a founding member, to highlight climate change and encourage people to make small changes to help the environment, and it uses a green love heart to spread its message.
Previously members have embroidered love hearts onto upcycled fabric, painted love hearts, made bunting and sent messages to local politicians to raise awareness. This year we decided to use the skills of member Nina, and make felted love hearts and write messages on green cardboard hearts. Our craft club then will make them into bunting.
Members enthusiastically stabbed tufts of wool into their green hearts. Images of burning trees, bleached coral, pollinators (tying in with a previous WI campaign to save bees) were all produced. Campaigning is central to the WI, and we have had resolutions to look after the environment going all the way back to 1918.
Our next meeting will be on 6 March at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start at the Grandstand, Carholme Road. Bring a mug – free for members, £5 for guests. This will be our annual meeting followed by a quiz.
