May 2024’s meeting was (as usual) intended to be a debate on the resolutions, however, this year’s resolution was not particularly controversial (some might say toothless) about the lack of NHS dental provision. Therefore the committee decided to invite local environmental groups so members could see what opportunities there are to be involved around the City in various projects.
There was much chattering about the resolution, Jules explained how dental provision worked in the NHS, one member spoke about the link between gum disease and the increased risk of having a heart attack, stroke or other serious cardiovascular event. As getting an NHS dentist in Lincoln is like finding hen’s teeth it was unsurprising that the resolution was carried.
Once this part of the meeting was over members were free to talk to the stall holders, and discuss how they could get involved with projects across the City.

We had EarthLincs, University of Lincoln, Lincoln Conservation Group and the Lincolnshire Organic Gardeners’ Organisation (LOGO) attended with displays and examples of the equipment they use. The WI has rural roots and it was a great opportunity to see the variety of work that happens in the City supporting the environment. EarthLincs host a climate cafe on Mint Lane and repair cafes, Lincoln Conservation Group are active all over the county working to restore green spaces and came with a well stocked first aid kit, LOGO support gardeners in going organic and also encourage members to sell/barter their excess produce, and the University of Lincoln which has re-wilded areas, has an urban bee rooftop garden and the new building has bat bricks inbuilt.

Just before we drew the raffle the annual educational bursary was drawn, this gives members a chance to win a contribution to a local educational course. Part of the WI is about educating women and Lincoln WI has maintained a bursary scheme for over 5 years, giving members a helping hand to further their knowledge generally in a craft skill.
Next month will be the Lincoln Theatre Royal giving a talk about its history.
