May is the month where we vote on the annual resolution, this year the entire WI had voted to take forward:
Clean rivers for people and wildlife.
This was a difficult campaign as Lincoln is not wholly known for its water courses, although it was build on the River Witham and the Brayford Pool is still an important part of the City’s tourist and ecology, and the city is criss-crossed by drains.
There was some discussion on how the WI could get involved in this campaign, and would our resources be better spent on highlighting previous campaigns such as: ‘Plastic Soup’ in 2017; or the 1936 campaign deploring the large scale pollution of rivers; the 1988 campaign on water quality; and the campaigns from 1937, 1958 and 1970 on sewerage.

Wendy who swims in the sea did the for argument and Lara the against. Everyone had a vote, and it was very close with 13 against and 14 for. This was mainly as members thought WI resources could be better directed at existing campaigns, rather than a new one on a similar topic.
After this we had a social evening, where members completed a questionnaire about how they want the Lincoln WI to evolve and engage with the local community. The committee will read through these over the next few weeks and plot to make Lincoln WI even better.
